Source

Garcinia mangostana Linn is a tropical evergreen tree also called the purple mangosteen or more commonly ,mangosteen. This tropical plant which believed to have originated in the Sunda Islands and the Moluccas of Indonesia has interesting biological activities with potential therapeutic applications. The fruit of the mangosteen is sweet and tangy, juicy, somewhat fibrous, with fluid-filled vesicles (like the flesh of citrus fruits), with an inedible, deep reddish-purple colored rind (exocarp) when ripe. The mangoesteen is widely cultivated in tropical area mainly in Southeast Asian nations like Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Philippines, and Thailand primarily for its fruit . However, people in these countries also have used the pericarp (peel, rind, hull or ripe) of mangosteen as a traditional medicine for the treatment of abdominal pain, diarrhea, dysentery, infected wound, suppuration, and chronic ulcer.

Experimental studies have demonstrated that extracts of mangosteen have antioxidant, antitumoral, antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral activities.

Main Bio-actives

Products derived from mangosteen are now distributed increasingly all over the world. This has given rise to a concomitant increase in research on the phytochemical constituents and biological activity of mangosteen. The typical phytochemicals found in mangosteen include catechins, rosin, mangostin, normangostin, xanthones, gartanin and tannins.Amount these components the central phytochemicals that contribute to the biological activity of mangosteens are xanthones such as α-mangostin, a polyphenolic xanthone derivative from mangosteen.Currently, α-mangostin have exhibited antioxidant ,anticancer, anti-inflammatory and synergistic activity with antibiotics against resistant bacteria in lab researches.

Functions

1. Antioxidant

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are important mediators in a number of degenerative diseases and antioxidant can inhibit ROS production through controlling oxidative stress .Therefor natural compounds with antioxidant properties has been hoped to be therapies to decrease oxidative damage and stimulate endogenous cytoprotective systems. Rind of mangosteen is one of the best natural sources of xanthones, which have been reported to have high antioxidant activity.According to research reported on J. Agric. Food Chem in 2006 the antioxidant activities of Garcinia mangostana L (commonly known as mangosteen) was verified and as one mechanism of its anticancer actions . There are 14 highly oxygenated prenylated xanthones were isolated from the extract of the mangosteen pericarp and the antioxidant activities of all isolates were determined using authentic and morpholinosydnonimine-derived peroxynitrite methods . Amount these compositions there are 4 compounds including α-mangostin were the most active.

2. Anticancer

The anticancer property of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L) has been drawing attention to its potential therapeutic applications. A study on International Journal of Molecular Sciences investigated the anti-proliferative effects of four prenylated xanthones from the pericarps in various human cancer cells in 2008 ,and α-mangostin, β-mangostin, γ-mangostin these three all show strong inhibition cell growth at low concentrations from 5 to 20 μM in human colon cancer DLD-1 cells.Another research group conducted an investigation of the anticancer effect of

α-mangostin in human PCa cells and its role in targeting cell cycle-related proteins involved in prostate carcinogenesis. On their repoet on Carcinogenesis it is found that a-mangostin significantly decreases PCa cell viability in a dose-dependent manner.Further research showed on ANTIOXIDANTS & REDOX SIGNALING that a-Mangostin resulted in a significant inhibition of Pancreatic cancer cells (PL-45, PANC1, BxPC3, and ASPC1)viability and a dose-dependent increase of apoptosis in PC cells without having any effects on normal human pancreatic duct epithelial cells.Front Pharmacol conluded in 2013 extracts and individual xanthones have been found to induce apoptosis and inhibit proliferation on cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Based on the reported findings there is clear evidence that these polyphenols target multiple signaling pathways involved in cell cycle modulation and apoptosis.

These findings could provide a relevant basis for the development of xanthones as an agent for cancer prevention and the combination therapy with anti-cancer drugs.

3. Anti-allergies and inflammations

A randomized, double- blind, placebo- controlled clinical trial was conducted using 60

participants, 30 men, and 30 women, ages 18–60 were conducted in 2015 to dtermine the anti- inflammatory activitiy of mangosteen .The report on Food Science & Nutrition the inflammatory biomarkers, in the mangosteen group, between the preintervention and postintervention, the C- reactive protein level significantly decreased by 46%, while no obvious decreases for the same biomarker was observed in the placebo group. Food Chemistry released in 2012 , an investigation for the effect of α-and γ-mangostins on the bone marrow-derived mast cell (BMMC) mediated allergy mechanism induced by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) plus A23187. α- and γ-mangostins demonstrated to inhibit Interleukin (IL)-6, prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) and leukotriene C4 (LTC4) production as well as degranulation in PMA plus A23187 induced BMMC. Furthermore, α- and γ-mangostins were found to repress cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 expression in the reported study. Thus, these results suggest that α- and γ-mangostins may be useful in alleviating mast cell-mediated allergic inflammatory responses.

4. Antivirus and anti-bacteria

Early study on J Med Assoc Thai determined the eliminating ability of the mangosteen mangosteen extract on S. Enteritidis .The report suggests that polysaccharides in the extract can stimulate phagocytic cells and kill intracellular bacteria (S. enteritidis). The extract was fractionated by anion exchange chromatography on a DEAE-cellulose column as MDE1-5 fractions. Activating score (mean +/- SD) of nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) test of 100 polymorphonuclear phagocytic cells were 145 +/- 78, 338 +/- 58, 222 +/- 73, 209 +/- 77, 211 +/- 63, 372 +/- 19, 369 +/- 20, 355 +/- 34 in normal saline control, phorbol myristate acetate (PMA), MDE3, MDE4, indomethacin (I), PMA + MDE3, PMA + MDE4 and PMA+ I, respectively. Superoxide generation test was also shows both MDE3 and MDE4 stimulate superoxide production. The number of S. enteritidis in cultured monocyte with extract of pericarb of mangosteen was killed.

Applications

Mangosteen is used for diarrhea, urinary tract infections (UTIs), gonorrhea, thrush, tuberculosis, menstrual disorders, cancer, osteoarthritis, and an intestinal infection called dysentery. It is also used for stimulating the immune system and improving mental health. Some people apply mangosteen to the skin for eczema and other skin conditions.

Studies presented the possible therapeutic applications for its antioxidant ,anticancer ,anti-bacteria, anti-allergies and inflammations .
